About the Artist

Artist Statement

I rarely have an idea of where a painting is going to take me. I will see a shape with an intriguing contour and that will become the basis for an entire painting. Once I have a shape on the canvas, I enter into a kind of a conversation with it. The painting truly tells me what it needs. I think of each painting as a puzzle that has never been solved before. My task as a painter is to find the perfect way to put them together.

Short Biography

I grew up on Manhattan's upper west side and began my formal art training at the Art Students League of New York when I was 12. I studied drawing and oil painting there for the next 15 years. In 1978, I moved to Rochester and have had a studio in the Anderson Arts Building for 30 years.

Ten years ago, I took a week-long summer workshop at Bennington College called Painting with Fabric. At this workshop I was introduced to collage on canvas - gluing fabrics onto canvas and then painting with acrylics. Before this, I had worked exclusively in oils incorporating patterns into my works by way of painting. Now I glue fabrics onto the surface of the canvas and work the paints in and around them. About Wrap Yourself in Art

A few years ago, I discovered a 230-year-old family owned business in the foothills of North Carolina that could weave images of my paintings into blankets. I called my newest endeavor "Wrap Yourself in Art". These blankets are soft, warm, 100% cotton and machine washable. Visit my website www.WrapYourselfInArt.com to see all 10 of them.

PS They make great wall hangings too!
