Short Biography

I am a pediatric occupational therapist by training, but my education as a Creative began early on with my grandmothers. Laura had been raised on a farm and knew how to stretch her resources, make what she needed and appreciate the beauty of nature. She never sat without a crochet hook in her hands. A favorite spring/summer pastime was to search for hidden lady slippers in the forest. Dot was an intelligent woman who found ways to learn wherever she could. She dabbled in stretch-and-sew, stained glass, enameling and weaving. She had an eye for color and design. They both taught me to sew, one on a treadle machine, the other on a more sophisticated, modern model.

Inspiration from these 2 mentors as well as many others along the way have made it possible for me to explore and enjoy a creative life. I sew, crochet, knit, felt, dye, weave, and design jewelry. I have supplemented with art history and design courses, but mostly I find someone to teach me what I need or I teach myself through research and experimentation. I don't like to worry about the "right" way to do things- I do what feels good. I don't often do the same thing twice. I thrive on color and texture. Ethnic fabrics and handicrafts from Peru, Guatemala, Thailand and many others inspire me. I have recently enjoyed "rescuing" fabrics that have been discarded and making something beautiful with them.
