Heather Gray
Painter
Patterns, color, travel, and movement in nature shape my work, with loose references to water, fire, sky, wind, and plant life. I begin each painting openly, letting color and the motion of the brush guide what comes next as imagery slowly emerges. By working intuitively and releasing control, unexpected patterns and relationships form, building depth and meaning over time. Rather than depicting a specific place, my paintings draw on memory and emotion, creating a space that feels both familiar and imagined.
Artist Statement
Originally from Rochester, Heather Gray earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in glass and a minor in photography from California College of the Arts. She was one of two students selected to assist Dale Chihuly's hotshop team when the glass sculptor was a CCA visiting artist. After graduating, she moved to Seattle and worked for Chihuly Studio for 10+ years.
Now living back in Rochester, she has been in the Anderson Arts Building since 2019, dedicating herself to painting. Gray's artwork engages viewers as she develops her different styles, never failing to surprise with new directions. Her art spans colorfield painting, active painting, nature-based abstraction, landscape, and realism.
